Incident at Borringup dam

MY UNCLE MAX is a big bloke, so when the other day that old dero Shannon comes sneaking through our woods looking for something to pinch, uncle Max just stands there and tells him to bugger off.

But that Shannon is stupid or something, and he doesn’t listen. He just keeps coming, hopping about on that funny leg of his, looking for a way through our wire.

Now, uncle Max doesn’t often lose his temper, because mostly he doesn’t need to, being as big as he is. But if people don’t do what he tells them he gets upset, and when he’s upset he can be real nasty.

He starts shouting bugger this and bugger that at Shannon, and when Shannon still doesn’t pay attention he starts to chase him off.

Shannon sees uncle Max coming at him and takes off like a rabbit. Boy, he sure can run fast for an old dero with a funny leg!

But uncle Max can run even faster, and he catches up to Shannon and aims a kick at his bum. He misses, of course, because you can’t kick someone properly when you’re both running – just you try!

At the edge of the woods, where it slopes down to the dam, Shannon trips. Next thing we know, he’s rolling down the slope. Boy, that must’ve shook him up!

Anyway, uncle Max looks down at him for a bit, and then starts back to the house. When he sees me there watching him, he knows that I’ve seen everything that happened, and you could tell from the look on his face that he’s embarrassed. So he tells me to bugger off too.

Which I did, of course, because like I said, when you don’t do what uncle Max tells you he gets upset, and when he’s upset he can be real nasty.

A charming piece. I liked it although I don't know why.

Hello, MatthewFarlow.

The innocence of boyhood, perhaps?
