Arachnophobia

The spider has a reputation
For causing fear and consternation
To timid souls who scream and beg
Each time they see a hairy leg;
Who think the spider’s web is tragic,
And not a part of nature’s magic.

The spider hardly ever rests
From keeping gardens free of pests;
By breakfast time he’ll catch a score,
And after lunch a dozen more.
For which he charges not a cent -
Just asks an even temperament.

I like spiderwebs, except when I walk into them! I would suggest you make that spider a 'she' (even with hairy legs!) as while young male spiders spin webs, they eventually abandon the practice in favour of mating (and getting eaten of course by their mate!)

You write rather witty insect poems Brahma and they are a joy to read.

I think I would've preferred this in 4/4 lines instead of 2/2/2/2 lines. It would've flowed better. That said, I love the theme and gentle dedication to one of the best friends we have in nature yet treat like a fiend. I used to have a spider that set up shop every summer for a few years in my backyard, and every night I'd take some time to catch some flies or Junebugs and feed it.

Hello, Delta40.

Thank you for your very kind comments.

But I think I'll leave this spider's gender as it is - having written of the female gender at length in the short story forum.

Hello, Morpheus.

I've re-cast this piece, and agree with your observation.
Thank you for that.

Regards to you both.

Brahma.

Ha, loved the ending: what more could a spider want from a person than level-headedness? Fantastic :)

Long live spiders, I'm in favour! And love your spider poem. Bar

I love spiders. They kill the insects that cause the real problems. And they're much more pleasing to the eye to boot. There's a gentle approach to this as though it might "win over" individuals with the phobia to some degree. Nicely done!
