Hello,
Im looking for a play or novel that deals with most, or at least some of the following themes:
the aristocrats or the rich, social conventions, decadence, hypocricy, vanity, tragedy, love, romance
What novel or play, that has at least some of these themes would you recommend?
thank you

Pretty much any novel or play will address one or more of those themes...
So, go with Hamlet.

I would recommend The Scarlet Pimpernel. I haven't read very far in it yet, but so far it's interesting and promises to be a good read. And I would definitely say it includes some or even most of the themes you mentioned, certainly aristrocrats and romance.

You could try Henry James - Washington Square, Portrait of a Lady, The Europeans, The Ambassadors - any of these would cover several of your requirements.
Or there's Edith Wharton - The Age of Innocence would also fit your list, as would Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby.
Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead Revisited would give you a view of a very particular kind of aristocracy.

Right, so maybe...
James Joyce "Dubliners"
Henry James "Daisy Miller"
John Osborne "Look Back in Anger"
Henry Thoreau "Walden" -> especially a chapter named "The Village".

I think that Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos would meet your needs. It's excellent. All that cruelty, manipulation and decadence by aristos in pre-revolutionary France, written by someone who knew that world, and would go on to become part of bringing down the ancien regime. A wonderful book.

I'd second Brideshead Revisited, but another of Waugh's novels, A Handful of Dust could be even better for your purposes.

I would agree. A Handful of Dust meets all of the requirements in full measure.
