In my mythical life today I'd stay in bed all day, with safe arms wrapped around me. I could be alone, but not alone. And I'd read a little, and sleep a little, and write a little and maybe read a little more. Van Morrison would play all day. Someone would bring me food, some of which would inevitably end up in my belly button. Maybe I'd take a long, long shower. But maybe not. Maybe we'd take a long, long walk down by the river in the rain. But maybe not. And I could cry without any questions; without anyone pretending like we can fix it. I'd let the children run amuck, eating whatever they wanted and watching movies all day, surrendering the housework disaster relief efforts until tomorrow. And it would be okay to let it all go for this one day. In my mythical life today, I could finally grieve how I've needed to for eighteen years. And it would be a good, good day.

It's an interesting and perhaps spooky coincidence that you picked the number 18 years. In Hebrew the numbers are represented by letters. 18 would be khet yod, which could be read as khai, i.e. life. Hence in presenting someone with a monetary gift one gives them multiples of 18, wishing them long life...
As for the fantasy, it sounds lovely...

That is a very cool coincidence. 18 is not random..my first baby I gave up for adoption turned 18 yesterday. Second one turns 16 tomorrow. This is always the day that is hardest of all.

My favorite line was the part about food ending up in the belly button :)
My heart goes out to you during this difficult week, I'm praying that you'll finally find the peace and acceptance you so clearly deserve.

I'm playing a little right now with prose poetry...I got a big heavy one coming...when I get the space to work on it. And I think the prose poetry form will suit it best. I never really have written like that, so that's kind of exciting.

This so reminds me of your Alternate Monday piece Shannon. I like how you give choice to the readers imagination with lines like:
Maybe I'd take a long, long shower. But maybe not.
Maybe we'd take a long, long walk down by the river in the rain. But maybe not.
You set us free then lasso us!

Shannon, it was smooth to read and poignant as it weaved the dramatic event of your young life... this piece witnesses your talent as prose poetry writer...
