An evil blister
squats upon the land.
The little people
–smaller every day
–thrash around beneath it.
Beneath it.

Curious spelling of "currant," still trying to figure out how that ties in.

All I can say is: eww.

Curious spelling of "currant,"

Sorry about that. There was no raisin to spell it that way. I've corrected it.

I think some of the most likable poetry happens when the reader feels the poet communicates something the reader cannot. You speak for me on this one- and for many others, I'm certain.

...beneath it.
Beneath it.

Yes, beneath the beneath, or, shall we say "beneather still"

Things to say with two words. Wonderful expression, Prince.

what does it all mean apart from natural disasters and political unrest, I think we live under a festering blister about to pop.....very impressionable writing Prince

I do have hope there is an end to a "beneath" for "little people"... and love this poem for both a sense of vulnerability and that of strength it conveys so aptly.

(even if we are caught between "currant" and "raisin" :smile5:!!! and wonder what is the hidden reason behind them, especially since tu bi'shevat is over!!)

Best regards,

Because of the prohibition re politics, I can't be more specific or overt than I have been, but I will PM you an explanation.

Yes, I think it's clear enough what is being suggested here, as anyone who has seen the news in recent weeks will be aware.

The repetition of 'beneath it' brings Orwell's 'boot stamping on a human face forever' to mind. It's unfortunate there's a 'no politics' rule, but understandable. Maybe you'll have to find more, clever metaphorical ways around that, Prince?

Just the same it's a berry nice little piece you've written here.

and bravo Auntie! you ARE dear (do I repeat myself?), I'm always moved by the way you combine erudition, honesty, modesty and lovingkindness.

prince, no, no politics, but Anna Akhmatova would have been your best pal.

Not a raisin to write about what's currant in the dry desert lands unless it is just the size of what is happening to humanity. This pithy poem hits like a land mine, berried beneath.

May I say 2 more things?

1. Blank_Verse's allusion to Orwell's boot metaphor is apt, both to "current" events in general and to your poem in particular.

2. I hope you don't mind my posting the following joke by Gary Shandling. It's not meant to poke fun at your most serious poem, but rather at the concept of "current events."

Gary Shandling was constantly talking about himself to his gal pal du jour, such as asking her, "How does my hair look?"

"Oh, why do we always have to talk about you?" the young lady asked. "Why can't we talk about something serious like current events?

"All right," Gary replied. "How does my hair look now?"

He he, AuntShecky. Maybe we're beneath a cloud, a smelly, corrosive cloud that culd eventually kill us. I know I feel that way.

Your brevity as always takes ones breath away, dear Prince.
