What's your favorite?


I ate a salami sandwich every weekday from about the first through eighth grades. Still love them. I feel a little more cultured because now I often add cheese to the sandwich.:p

I like lunch meat that doesn't taste processed and I pretty much like all kinds but I really have to be in the mood for roast beef and roast beef more than any other type of lunch meat has to be of a certain quality. And even when I get quality roast beef, it better not have a green sheen to it when the light hits it at a certain angle. I can't stand that. Roast beef is tasty, but it's probably best if I don't see it.

So lunch meats - do we like them pre-packaged? Or do we get it fresh sliced?

If you buy your lunch meat pre-packaged, do you get it in the containers that you can re-use once the meat is all gone?

If you get your lunch meat from the deli, do you like it thick sliced or thin sliced? Or shaved into shredded bits?

And while we're at it, do we like sandwich spreads such as chicken salad pimento cheese or hummus?? Oh there' so many places we could take this fascinating topic.

And what's up with the dead baby post above there? I had a friend who ate ham sandwiches and she always called it raw a$s for some reason...maybe i should introduce the two of you.

I like PEK (canned) which is lumps of pig in jelly. I don't know which particular bits of pig are in it , but they're very tasty lumps.

My favourite sandwich fillings are non-meat (though I do like pastrami occasionally) - egg mayonnaise, smoked salmon (Tesco do a taramasalata with smoked salmon... mmmm) and, my all-time favourite, brie on walnut bread with black grapes - thank you M&S for introducing me to that combination.

Oh, I do have one, apart from mortadella too, which is a bit jucky, but which I like too much to think about it:

it's Flemish tortu (or however it is written). Pieces of pork meat in tomato jelly, sliced. mmm

And then there is really nice salami with lots and lots of garlick :D.

Where I'm currently living there's a place with chili salami - total knockout! I don't know if it's common or popular everywhere else but I'm completely stoked with it

I am partial to the pastramis and such, but only if I buy it early in the morning because I find it loses it's flavour sitting open in the glass cabinets until lunch. If purchased at nine and kept in my fridge it's fine

Chicken can be yummy, as can tuna with fresh peppers garlic and olive oil, but I adore salmon in preference, though I think I may be allergic to smoked - I like the taste but I can't eat much more than a nibble before feeling queasy

Pek!! Now there's a blast from the past.

Well it is 100% pork - meaning they didn't scrimp on using any past of the pig for it. Snout, connective tissue, hell a pigs ear becomes edible if you shred and boil it enough and add salt...

I used to like spam fritters and corned beef hash. Corned beef was ok in sandwiches. Cold spam though...

Although it's quite popular with Vikings.

I purchase it occasionally as a treat and only when it is on special. I am so confused. I was reading about the British class system and could not decide where I am located. Does spam qualify as a mark down?

Corned Beef I can understand, though my Irish grandmother used to cook it and it would stink to high heaven. (Corned Beef is a staple of Irish immigrants in North America for some god Forsaken reason).

Spam is disgusting.

Never tried spam. I am not so keen on meat (unless it is roast beef or steak) in my sandwich.

Cheese and tomato will always be the winning combination for me.

It certainly does. You can tell by the way it has been marketed as "Luncheon Meat" in the past, as if it is really high class. No-one could consider it so. it is the cooked meat equivalent of stone cladding.

Sorry. I'm afraid your claim to be of the aristocracy is looking... shaky. :biggrin5:

Actually thee was a variety of chili spam I tried a few times that was quite palatable, but not if it's cow udders dressed up

How about KFC? Deep fried rabbit from a barrel with eleven different herbs and spices (not including the chemical tenderisers)

I once got food poisoning from a lunch meat platter on Christmas. Ever since then, I can't eat any form of lunch meat. The closest would be roast beef sandwichies.

Roast beef is pretty "iffy" for me. It's often too under cooked for my liking and bleeds onto my bread. *urk* I can't abide that. I just avoid it now.

I love hummus. I make sandwiches just of hummus and pita bread. Hummus looks gross, it's the only bad thing about it.

Corned beef was an extremely economical way to feed a family, particularly when combined with some of the cheaper vegetables.

I love hummus. I make sandwiches just of hummus and pita bread. Hummus looks gross, it's the only bad thing about it.

Ohhhh, I do like hummus sandwiches. I've also taken a liking to feta on lightly toasted pita bread.

Roasted red pepper hummus is my current fave. The feta sandwich sounds nice as well. Feta and grilled onions on pizza is surprisingly good. Gah, I'm making myself hungry...

well maybe it's not for everyone, and for me, it's only once a while. And the first time I was presented with such a thing I thought that one ought not eat such things.

But theres's something about fried bologna. There's something about fried anything - actually it's the smell of something deep fried mingled with the smell of cigarette smoke and maybe aquanet hairspray and freshly washed laundry (whites) in bleach. That something is southern white trash maybe. Wow, we were talking about lunch meat and that's where I took it.

Such good smells, all! But no, while I do eat it with mayo (actually Miracle Whip :D), is always fresh from the fridge. And these days it's wheat, not white. I know, the blasphemy.

I don't want to look it up in the dictionary (or go to Merriam Webster and click on the sound icon) so I'm going to ask here:do people really pronounce bologna the way it looks (well, with a silent g I guess) or does everyone see the word bologna and then say baloney, no problems. If you say you want a bologna sandwich instead of a baloney sandwich, are you being a pretentious arse?

I always think "Bow Log Na" when I see the word bologna but I say baloney unless I'm with my husband - he thinks things like that are funny. Anyone else would most likely roll their eyes. ANYWAY, got off on a tangent there...

Or is bologna/baloney a regional thing?

I think my current favorite is smoked turkey with Swiss cheese and a little bit of lettuce on rye. Not Iceberg lettuce though, it is much too watery.
