I got stuck on my side
while two little girls insisted
we would miss the bus
if I didn't grab the quilt
and pillows now.
They sang By Baby Bunting
on the back seat
snuggled in the safety
of my home
while I lolled in their sticky
sweet tunes.
We arrived at the station
and I did not consider
what I had just left behind.
No eiderdown security
to be found on this platform.
There was no going back.
I pulled the girls close to me
as the wind twirled
through their tops and mops.
'Don't leave us here!'
they cried as the roaring
tunnel echoed another
departure in two minutes
from my bedside.
They blew around the room
like dust balls
as I boarded the train
which zoomed me further
from my destination -
true wakefulness.
I gazed at the carriage
most connected to me
where you rose through
the aisle floor waving.
I'm sure you're stalking me, you teased
I fumbled with my cell
to find a better signal.
You mimicked:
'The number you are calling
is temporarily busy ,
please try again later.'
I prised the door of my dreams open
and leapt onto the tracks
to head back to reality.
The girls chased after me,
screaming,
their grasping
hands trying to hold onto
my maternal side.
You yanked me free
and said I must finish the ride
since I created this scenario.
The girls wept
as you unknotted them
from my apron and
smacked them away.
'Bye Bye Mummy' they sobbed
and crawled across the tall boy
to dwell in the furtherest corner
of my room.
You kissed my dry lips
and sang
See you later alligator
as only a demon could
before you left me naked,
quivering
in the early light
of another
sleep paralysis night.
