"I shall try to forget. I have no daughter. There used to be a half-caste woman in my house, but she is going even now."

What is the meaning of "There used to be a half-caste woman in my house, but she is going even now."?
The passage is from Almayer's Folly. Almayer's daughter is half Malay and half British.
Does it mean "Once upon a time there was a half-breed woman in my house but now she is leaving me"? "Even now" made me a little confused so I wanted to ask your idea.

Maybe you'll get better-informed opinions after this in this thread, but my impression (after not having read the book and just seeing your post) is that the "even now" bit is just underlining the surprise and immediacy of her leaving. He's looking right at it happening.

It must be pretty difficult to process 'in the moment'... Maybe the author is highlighting something along those lines, the desperation and disbelief, etc. The idea of forgetting it must be pretty daunting.
