In 1826 there was a gold rush. Not one of the large ones as in California or the Black hills of Dakota, just a small one. Anyway, it seems there was one and people got rich, well, some did.
Gold can bring out the worst in people. They will cheat and lie, even kill for Gold! Some call it the Devils metal, whilst others claim it as the saviour of man:
Deep in the mine the partners had toiled to extract the last of the mother load. The mine was nearly played out but they wanted the very last of it! Greed had overtaken sanity.
Up on the surface and a little way from the partners mine was a cabin, nothing special as cabins go but it was home to the partners. In this cabin sat a woman, nothing special as women go but she was the long suffering wife of one of the partners.
Eight miles east of the partners mine was another which was owned and worked by one Francis Bartholomew. Now, Francis had a coveted eye for the wife and had decided to make her his, so he hatched a diabolical plan. He decided he would kill both partners and claim it was nothing more but a tragic accident. Thereafter consoling the grieving widow just like any considerate neighbour. He would have her and the partner’s gold for himself, for his own diggings had produced very little in the way of devils metal.
Francis had it all worked out, he would sneak up to the partners mine under cover of dark and place a blast-powder charge a little way into the entrance, then, when the partners started work in the morning he would light the fuse and twenty seconds later..Boom!
Francis took off on his mission of murder and debauchery, everything having been carefully worked out and set; all he had to do was light the fuse. He waited, and waited; and when finally the partners entered the mine Francis lit his fuse.
FZZZZZZZZZZZZZ….pop! The fuse extinguished! Francis in despair, and disregarding all caution regarding explosives, rushed into the mine to relight the fuse, just as the rich widow to be lit hers.
