I buy some old shirts, jackets
Hats and trousers from a yard sale
Wednesday - not to wear out
But for rags mainly, and to don
When working around the house
Or in the shed

I proceed down the street and
Upon returning home pour the articles
From their black plastic garbags - spreading
Them around the ground I find them
All the same colour and of similar design
- Black with tiny red holes

The red is still sticky but
It doesn't occur to me at once
That there is anything amiss
With this - had they been used
To mop up paint spillage or an
Unknown chemical?

I leave them on the grass in the sun
While I more restorations are made
On my classic black Cadillac from
Nineteenthirtythree - what a
Beauty and still with the original
Whitewalls

Though a story in itself I digress
A little to explain that this
Machine glistening in the sun
Is my joy and pride - months
I've spent poring over every detail
Cleaning her

For it was mainly dust that had
Gathered - not rust, and a little
Mould here and there - mostly
Behind the rear seat and beneath
The dash - but I'd had her smelling
Shining brand new

Later that night or the next
Morning my antique grandfather clock
In the dining room rings out and
As usual I count the echoing tolls
But something I'd never - beyond the
12th peel

One more! One hollow bell to mark
The thirteenth hour! What's caused this
I know never - but at this moment there
Rises a disturbance from my yard - hushed
Shouting and loud rustling amongst the
Trees and Bushes

And next the unthinkable - the unmistakable
Sound of my sweetheart roaring into life
I throw off the covers beneath which I'd
Been cowering and fly window-ward
To peer deep into the dark night hard
Only to discover

The shed doors open, the voices silent
And no stranger thing than the headlights
Beaming on their path down the drive
- I hadn't repaired them! What this ghostly
Vision! Surely now I must be in a dream!
A nightmare!

Outside I race to the pace of my
Pounding heart and grab my torch
Unsteadily flashing it about the garden
While also acquiring a rake and a length
Of hose, warily staggering to the shed
- My Cadillac!

It is gone! Driven into the night by fiends!
On the street no indication of direction
To call the cops would I do as the only means
Of chase is taken - but the line is dead!
Glowing and beeping - responding to my
Button mashing

The phone is working - but the line is
Dead! It is then I observe what I'd
Missed before - my sack of clothes
All holey, black and red, no longer strewn
Not where I'd left them earlier - nowhere
To be seen

Let the dogs out! I cry to the darkness
There is mischief in the air! But my forlorn
Wailing is met with silence - the rage
Inside me with my boiling blood I return inside
To consider my options and figure how-
What's that!

The

Headlights!

Up

The

Driveway!

Kling! Klang! Klung! Klang!

Kling! Klang! Klung! Klang!

KLAAANG!!!
