Which are you generally?

Me, I'm a pessimist - the glass is well and truly half empty and someone will probably knock it over into the bargain.

I'm an optimist. Aim for the best case scenario and adjust as circumstances arise.

In general, I'm an optimist, but in order to keep my optimism, I try to plan the worst case scenario so I usually get a better result that I hoped for. Particularly money-wise that works very well :).

:biggrin5: Ha, ha - looks like I'm the only pessimist so far, but Litnet is sure* to follow with some fellow noble grumps.

* On the other hand...(pessimist see?)

I tend to be somewhat of a pessimist.

Not grumps, Neely, but realists. I'm optimistic on medical advancement but deeply pessimistic about social decline.
The West is currently witnessing its own Götterdämmerung which the Germans predicted during the early years of the 20th century.

Yes I agree, realist in the same sense too. I'll check out the Götterdämmerung because I'm not sure I've heard that at all. (I think that whenever I read the papers or study p*litics I tend to feel very pessimistic about things. My own coping method works, which is not to follow the news and lose yourself in art and forget the rest. Burying in the sand, yes, but it does indeed work!)

* Pessimistic disclaimer (before someone verbally criticises me in a smart a$s manner): Of course, I tend to hate questions such as this (the one I asked??) because they attempt to polarize human thought into two camps, which in reality is an over-simplification on a grand scale. However, I thought I'd ask anyway, I was curious.

I'd be an optimist but I doubt anyone would believe me.....

Well, Mr. Skimpole-type optimism makes me want to skin people, but I do have a Robert Browning-type faith-based optimism, such as that expressed in "Rabbi Ben Ezra". But sometimes, with Tennyson, I falter where I firmly trod. So, I don't think I can really vote.

I'm sort of an optimist, but not that I think the world is great and everybody's happy or fail to see the things that are going wrong in the world. But, personally speaking, I see pessimism as a quite useless attitude. It doesn't try to change any of the things that it complains about, so it's a waste of time.

I honestly can't say. I take the "the sun will eventually explode and that's how things go" view of things. That's sort of pessimistic and optimistic.

Me? Optimist in spirit, pessimist in practice.

Many years ago, my music master who knew I got into a tizz at the approach of every Grade exam described me as 'a Short Term Pessimist but a Long Term Optimist', ie 'Tomorrow is going to be dreadful but everything will be right in the end.' I think it still defines my outlook.

Definition - a Pessimist is someone who will never be disappointed.

The glass is neither half full nor half empty, it's twice as big as it needs to be

(I stole that from somebody, I didn't think of it)

I'm not listening to excuses. The dog ate your homework, you fell asleep, lost your diary etc, etc, not interested, besides I put in a disclaimer:

So come on and vote - you can't be optimistic about work because you are bound to be disappointed in that in the end, trust me, guaranteed - vote realist/pessimist! :biggrin5:

Ah, come on. Why are people being 50/50, surely you can find it in you to be 50.01 pessimist??? At least.

Honestly, work is evil, friends only want you to tell you their worries, it's raining tomorrow no doubt, bills keep going up - trust me bad news in the papers tomorrow, your team always loses, your relationship could have been better if only..., it would have worked out so well if only...you would have...when you were..., semi friends only tell you where they are going on holiday to brag, your neighbour hates you, the gas and electric companies rip you off, your internet connection will go down shortly, the phone will ring and it will be an annoying salesman selling you Virgin broadband, you will spill your cup of tea, the milk is going sour, the yogurts you have in the fridge are out of date, you have just drank your last glass of Organic Westons, your cooker is on the out, the next time you use your umbrella it will break - even light wind, your socks have holes, the post you want will be delayed, the bus will be late, you won't get that interview or pay rise, your shoes need replacing, you need to hoover up but the hoover is dodgy, you want to sleep but you can't, your essay is crap, your remote control is dead and no amount of shaking it is working (and no batteries in the cupboard), you have forgot to get a silly card for a boring relative and you'll get nagged, and, you are running out of toilet roll!!!

Vote pessimist!!! :frown2:

Optimist!! I wake up every day ready to handle whatever live brings me. The fact that I woke up means the day was already good!
