You echo in my head,
your voice knocking about
with relentless insistence.

You demand to be addressed.
So I converse with you as I wash the dishes,
question you as I fold the laundry,
seek your counsel while driving the car.

I listen for your sage reply;
you always said
what I needed to hear.
I hold my breath in the quiet pause

But you only tell me
I ought to watch the road.

Interesting. The narrator talking to herself. Is she alone, or is it just the only way she can get a decent conversation?

Well written, thoughtful piece ea.

Live and be well.

This is a brilliant depiction of the relationship between a person and... her alter ego? I see it as an evocation of our belief in or need for some other, apart from ourselves, cognizant of our circumstances but objectively detached from them; whereas in fact we already know "the road," and know we need to watch it.

It's the subtlest of psychological dramas and you've captured it in such a seemingly anecdotal manner!

Mystyr, I adore your comic. I agree, everybody needs a "little man," even if it means you have to fetch him a hot water bottle when he cries at night!

Interesting piece. That little voice is our constant companion.

(I love Michael Leunig!)

Impressive in its simplicity evad, whether it's N's alter ego or an ongoing voice of someone who's not with the N any longer, for whatever reason it might be...

Last L shows how sometimes a down to earth advice is the highest sort of wisdom...

It was wonderful to read you, thanks a lot!!!!

Or throw a boob in his mouth...(lol! says the momma who has nursed six babies).

I really like this--especially the ending!
