View Full Version : Our Scene

We forge a path through dunes and beach grass,
stumbling down the rocky hillside
to find ourselves beneath an overhang.

I have visions of From Here to Eternity
despite the sharp wind and pewter sky.
And why not? Don't I deserve a movie moment?
Pebbles dig into my back
the surf surges and fills my ears
it's frigid, but I'm determined…

Supine, I look up at the cliff and imagine tourists with cameras;
they will return with us, the stars of their slideshow.
Or, a ranger will stumble upon us
and with lips pursed in distaste, will inform us of which laws we have broken--
Imagine! The long distance phone call,
"You did what? Where?"
my mother paying bail!

I'm shivering
and there is sand in unexpected places.
Inevitably, a jellyfish will wish to join our embrace
or worse, a stingray! A shark!

But I pretend this is romantic,
this is our scene...
when it comes to acting,
Deborah's got nothing on me.

Loved this one - it's always so much more romantic on the silver screen. I won't ask how many 'takes' this took.

I loved this!
I'd prefer it if you didn't spoon-feed us with "pretending" (which should be omitted) that it's romantic because you already effectively convince us that it is thus!
Good job

I wonder if you really need the last two lines? Not everyone will recognize the reference to Ms Kerr, but thinking of this alongside "The Offering" I get the feeling that there's a playwright lurking inside of you. I loved the setting of this scene, punctuated by the imagined phone-call from your distressed mother.

I don't think the reader needs to know anything about Deborah Kerr and a movie she may have starred in with such a scene. I certainly don't. I was more impressed by the description and the subtle reference to movie, which when using my imagination, tells me a great deal EA.

Thanks for the advice, all... it was just a little piece making fun of myself, so I appreciate you reading it :)
