Why do some posters feel compelled to be smart alecs?

It seems that some posters wait in the woodwork for someone to post something that can be attacked, then they come out with the needle. I don't understand why some posters feel compelled to attack some writers for posting an opinion. Are they so insecure that they feel they must attack? I wish all posters who are smart alecs would stop and think before they post their insulting remarks.

This is a perfect example of what I mean. I stated an opinion and someone wrote a smart alec remark in reply.
