Fellow Lit-ologists,
I am in need of something specific and could use some help acquiring it. I've felt like I've read every short story anthology in the library and am just burnt out. I do oral interp in competitive forensics (speech team) and am in search of a new prose piece. I need:
1. a short story/ possibly novella which could be cut down
2. in first person
3. from a female perspective
4. written fairly recently (within the last 50 years)
5. and not very well known
Because it's for oral delivery, it can't be overly complex. Dramedy / dark comedy does well (some humor with a serious base-line). It also helps if it has a real hard hitting climax.
Any help with my little quest would be greatly appreciated. You guys are awesome!

Could it be a one-act dramatic monologue?

Based on your checklist, I immediately thought of the third act of Neil LaBute's Bash. It's a dramatic retelling of the Medea myth, entitled "Medea Redux." Really dark powerful stuff. Check it out.

Funny you mention that! I competed with that very piece 2 years ago, and it did very well! That's definitely the direction I want to go in. The only difference would be that I would enter with that into Drama as opposed to Prose, but I do both! So monologue suggestions are welcome too. Thank you!
