The big NCO had been giving the recruit a hard time right from the moment they had met. Always screaming at him in a rage, telling him how useless he was as a soldier, always bullying but never guiding.

Range day.The flags were up and the firing point was being drenched with sheet after sheet of freezing rain, the figurine targets set at 1000 yards could barely be seen, in fact they looked just like real people so far off in the rain storm.

The recruits were nervous, understandable for this was real rifles firing live rounds. Any firing range is a dangerous place to be, even in the hands of the most experienced firearms can kill by mistake. However, the mistake is always down to the person firing the weapon, never the firearm.

The recruits were given the "Range Live" warning and told to take aim and fire when ready. Rifles cracked in a ragged volley. The big NCO descended on the recruit like a demon from hell, screaming into his face he grabed the rifle from the recruit in his standard rage. BANG!! The NCO's beret flew off into the air, the top of his head still encased within it.

The recruit removed his finger from the trigger with a barely noticeable smile on his face.

I love these short snappy ones. Well written apart from bits of grammer & punctuation:

"this was real rifles" / "these were real rifles"
"even in the hands of the most experienced, (comma) firearms can kill by mistake"
"grabed" / "grabbed"

I laughed inwardly about being guided. The rule when I was in the military was that they broke you first, then they built you up.

Thanks for the story.
