The old city was forever blanketed in a dark and heavy fog. Like a piece of fruit with a spot of steadily growing mold; the city was growing sick and more evil with each passing year. What had once been a monument to human genius had began to decompose into a decaying heap of bricks and pipe, inhabited by rats and criminals. Gleaming metal skyscrapers had grown red with rust and where there had once been museums, mosques, theaters, and parks there was now only stone ruins.
Beneath the rusted metal and the crumbling stone was a thriving economy of illegal commerce. There were entire buildings filled with old gypsies selling their wares off of colorfully woven carpets. You could find anything in this jungle gym of evil happiness, there were endangered primates kept in cages to be bought by whomever had the mind and cash to buy them. Underground parking structures served as used car lots for petty carjackers. Ancient hotels now housed hundreds of orphaned miscreants, their webbed hammocks swinging in rows. The worlds merry men seemed to all have left their forestz and moved to this dilapidated city, business was good.
But among the dirty criminals there where a few shining men and women, with polished badges over their hearts they protected the outside world from the cities smelly innards. For you see, while the city had grown rotten at its core, it had continued to spread over the land. Neighborhoods crept like thirsty vines, and these outer rings of the city were still pure and youthful. The government officials had all but given up on the city as a whole, it had been determined to enforce a blockade, to contain the rats within the center, to protect the city from itself.
The men and women of the law worked in teams, each was unique in its makeup of individuals but one set of partners outshone the rest. Peter and Molly were their names, and they had all the skill it took to match the moves of their opponents, they never tired during the pursuit nor did they fail to keep their captured victims within the city jail. Peter was a man of action, he never hesitated to use deadly force. Molly was practically a human machine, she had a photographic memory and could run faster than any who would challenge her. These two outstanding citizens aimed to make their city a better place, they wanted to remove the garbage and return the city to its previous glorious state.
At night the pair would walk the beat, keeping wary eyes on the shadows. On a particularly dark and hairy night Peter wanted to explore an especially gritty area of the city. Molly followed close behind him, using her photographic memory to capture every detail of their surroundings. Boarded windows lined the street, the wind blew yellowed newspapers in playful circles on the pavement. Molly read the paragraphs as the they floated by.
Farther down the street there was an ancient lime green reclining chair, it had been situated under a glowing street lamp by some unknown person from the past. There was currently an overall clad individual sitting in the chair, he was entertaining a flock of grey and white pigeons with a grimy piece of toast. As the police officers shortened the distance between themselves and the man in the chair, the birds started clucking, then with a rush they all flew up to a dilapidated electrical wire that hung over the street between Peter and the overalled man. The pigeons watched from their wire as the man in the chair slowly got to his feat and then in a tired sort of way turned his head to look at the slowly approaching police. Peter strained to and squinted his eyes to make out the mans face, molly noticed that his knees were stained green from grass... "Ronnie?" she called out. "Is that you?" "sure is Molls, I haven's seen you for a while... are you still a cop?" said the man. Molly replied that obviously she was still a cop... "this game isn't over" Peter stepped forward and with a slight grin on his face told the man that they were going to have to come after him... ready or not...
The man nodded his head, then with a flip of his wrist he threw the piece of bread at Peter's feet, there was an explosion of feathers as the pigeons dashed for the crumbs... the man in the overalls took off in a dash. He ran down the streets, jumping puddles like a hurdler, flying towards the safety of darkness. Peter pulled his revolver from its holster and fired a shot past the man's ear. Molly took off in pursuit, Peter followed close behind, both had guns drawn and ready. Time slowed as their hearts began to race. Through slime ridden alleyways and over chain-link fences, they followed the man into a Chinese restaurant that had steam pouring from the windows...
They entered the still swinging door at breakneck speed, Molly was the first to follow "Overalls" through the door, as she entered she realized this wasn't a normal entrance; through the doorway was along winding slide! Molly hesitated only to be instantly smashed into by the gasping Peter. They both went down head first... as they slid down the twisting passage they could see their landing zone far below... it was surrounded by Overalls and three other thugs! Nothing could be done but to click their safeties off and prepare for battle! Finally they saw the light at the end of the tunnel, as they flew out of the opening, they heard bullets flying past, Peter screamed in pain as a shotgun blast hit him in the thigh. Molly fired off three quick rounds at the man in the overalls, only one connected while the rest punched grape sized holes into a old plastic playground rocking horse...
Ronnie Overalls gripped his lower abdomen as he sank to the ground... he looked at the pair of cops lying at the bottom of the tunnels entrance... Peter's life was quickly fading, Molly's face was stone cold, not from death but out of sheer concentration... "next time" she said "you won't get the drop on us... I never forget a trick"... Ronnie sneered as he pointed at Peter and said that it looked like there wasn't going to be a next time...
Suddenly a shrill yell came from around the corner; "ROOOOONNNIEEEE!!!!!" The voice shouted, "your mother is going to kill me when she sees what you've done to yourself!"
Peter, with eyes still closed and limp limbs still sprawled out in the sand, let out a snicker... Ronnie looked at him with an angry face, "hey your dead! once your dead you can't talk!" Molly let out a laugh and at that moment the bell rang sharp and clear... the dirty city vanished, and somewhere up the hill a woman yelled "recess is now over!"
