Looking for a book and other books like it

I've used the search functionality of the forum but I can't find what I'm looking for.

Basically, I've heard of a series of books where the same main character appears in different periods in history. It's not a time travel sci-fi thing, it's just that the author decided to have this character appear in different era's. I don't know the title or author of the book, but I'm really interested in finding out. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Also, the titles any other similar books would be nice. Not necessarily about characters living in different periods of time, but about the same kind of historical fiction.

Virginia Woolf's Orlando reappears through several periods of history - even changes sex as he/she goes - but that's a one-off book, not a series, so maybe it's not what you are looking for.

I haven't read anything like that, but some searching turned up a few possibilities:

Actually that's the only thing I could find. Is that it?

I haven't myself read the specific titles I'm trying to find. I have someone's birthday coming up, and I thought this would make a nice present. But I fear I will be unable to find out more details without raising suspicion. :)

Added info: that person has read the titles in that series so far. Bu there is supposed to be one more book coming out later.
