I've heard ya
Scuttling about
In the Dark
But I've
Never Seen ya

But I've Seen
Ya disgusting
Brats - come
Face to foot with
Every one of

The dirty bastards

And my heel's

Always won

But I've Never
Seen Ya My
Alien Bitc h

Scuffing in the Dark
Where tonight?

Under the Fridge?
Under the Oven?
Under the Sink?
Farther afield?
Or just higher?

One of these nights
I'll See ya
Scurrying across
The floor
The second
I click the Switch

And then I'll know ya
Better than I've ever
Known ya
And I've got
Something Special
For ya

A Size 19
With ya name
On the sole

Scuffing about
Scuttling in the Dark

Maybe not tonight
But one of these nights

Tonight I watched
A doco on insects
On our fascinating
Six legged friends
Who we've ever
Shared the planet with

And now an early night
A jug and glass
Of water for the ride
Better fill it up

YAAAGH!

TONIGHT!

ON THE WALL!

COP THE SIZE OF YA!

WIGGLING YA ANTENNAS!

No time to take a photo
Thoughts melt away
Along with plans
What to use
To get ya down
A brush
A broom
A mop

Ah Ha!
A rubber band!
Ready
Aim

Aim some more

Flick!

Gotcha!
Well I gotcha down
Where ya headed
Where ya scuttling
Off to?

No time to don
The Size 19s
Only reflex
Reaction and
Time to act!

Unarmed I face Ya
With my quick
Bare heel

Once!
Twice!
Thrice!

And inspect the damage

Still squirming and
Kicking ya legs
But Cop the Size of Ya

Not Ya Night Tonight

Tonight was my night
My Alien Bitc h
Prize

Fiercely satirical... I'm picturing a gangsta thug, declaring war on this motha cockroach that's invading his turf.

ha ha. I love it! I could feel my heart pounding with the drama of it all....I hate cockroaches and I think the use of 'ya' is so appropriate for this poem.

This is really good because the suspense is built up and maintained from the beginning to the very end. Once you start reading this poem (and some cockroaches would declare that this is not a poem; but they're cockroaches so their opinion doesn't matter), you cannot and will not stop reading it till the end (unless you're a cockroach). This also gives the reader a feeling of accomplished triumph at the end (sharing in the writer's feeling at writing it) by giving such a disgusting ugly useless insect a well-deserved squashing and demise--regardless of the unpleasant feeling it gives the reader on squashing the bug. People For The Ethical Treatment Of Vermin (PETV for short) might object...but never mind.

That was a very enjoyable ride MM and as pointed out above, there was no way I was getting off before the end. Great fun.

Hey thanks everyone!

I've explained elsewhere that I don't usually read the comments - this is because I never expect them to be in any way encouraging - but you all liked it?

I'm humbled...

Hi MM, maybe you should tweak the tag line to "Lost in a comic vortex" :D Archy and Mahitabel never read like this! You reveal the primeval soul of of the hunter stalking his prey. Loved the references to Alien too. Great fun...

Live and be well - H

Charles Simic's poem 'Cockroach' offers an interesting comparison. It starts:

When I see a cockroach,
I don't grow violent like you.
I stop as if a friendly greeting
Had passed between us.
and gives a more empathetic take on things.

I have always liked a good metaphor!

In the days before Raid,
'twas a frightful parade
on a sultry warm night.
With a flick o' the light

off they all scattered
before being splattered
and frantic to split
'ere a squirt of the Flit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flit).
