View Full Version : Sing me the "Blue"s. . . .

The Comedian

I'm plannin' a party at my house around a "February blues" theme. On the menu thus far:

blueberry pie
bleu cheese fondue (well, there's bleu cheese in the fondue)
and my own "sing me the blues" jambalaya
with Blue Moon ale & blood oranges for drink

So, I need some help with the musical score. Do you all know of any songs with "blue" in the title or a featured in the song?

I've already got a good selection of "the blues" -- I just need some more ideas.

Thanks!

I've just noticed that Comedian has stipulated Blue rather than Blues, so here's another that fits the bill.

Louis Armstrong has a great version of W.C. Handy's classic "Beal Street Blues". I can't find it on YouTube, although they have this great version by Ella Fitzgerald:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cV5QOZHNH8

Of course Hamby's St. Louis Blues is perhaps the foundation of the whole of jazz and no one did it better than Louis Armstrong:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2TUlUwa3_o&feature=related

Then there's the magnificent How Blue Can You Get? by B.B. King:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l45f28PzfCI

I agree that I'd include The Blues in the Night... but Frank Sinatra's classic recording from the album, Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely:

Billie Holiday: Am I Blue?

Billie Holiday: Blue Moon

Duke Ellington- Diminuendo in Blue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QXUYpPa87M

Thelonius Monk- Blue Monk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmhP1RgbrrY

Miles Davis- Blue in Green (of course you could take anything from the Kind of Blue album)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoPL7BExSQU

And there's Bill Evan's classic take on the same song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW_7gRH7ASE&feature=related

John Coletrane- Blue Train:

Muddy Waters- Catfish Blues

John Lee Hooker- Blues Before Sunrise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oz66xHeaaM

and of course there's Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue:

Well, you've GOT to have some 90's raver europop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4QGPWLY-EM

Really a coming of age story. It's just a story about a little guy that lives in a blue house, and all day and all night and everything he sees is just blue like him, inside and outside. There is literally no song more blue.

Thanks for the suggestions. And while, yes, I do want to and include the "blues" as an element for the musical background of my party, what I really want are songs with "blue" in the title. Hence the menu, drink selections. . .Oh, and I'm serving everything on blue paper plates and blue cups. It's going to be hysterical.
