Has anyone on here read this book?
I am looking for a good overview of this book.

I have not read the book, but spent some time researching and reading reviews online.

For this, it is my impression that this book is less about explaining any specific religions, but explaining why there are any religions at all. It is a collection of writings from various philosophers (Marx and Freud were two names that caught my eye) who have formulated theories on the origins, meaning and value of religion. Each reading is accompanied with an introduction to and a critique of the reading itself. It seems to be intended as a companion for a college textbook, although it would have value besides.

My opinion is that it will be somewhat dismissive toward religion itself and if value is found in it, it is not because any particular religion is true. Oxford University Press is a very impressive academic press, so I would expect typical scholarly depth, but also typical scholarly condescension or disbelief of religion. But, again, I have not read it.

I hope that may help.
