I have been trying and trying to remember the title to a book I read back in high school. I loved it, and wanted to read it again....
The book was about a young girl who lived with her father. A stranger came to visit one day and took a liking to her. He stayed a while and they became close...he ended up taking her with him to his home, and being married. But later on in the book she finds out that he was already married, and that the marriage between them was faked. She tries to run away and he chases after her. She meets a priest along the way, and he helps her run from her false husband. The girl and the priest fall in love, but the priest is sworn to take no lovers. The girl continues running, and even shoots herself to try and get away from the man chasing her. She lives, and he puts her in a mental ward to try and keep her from hurting herself again, but the priest saves her and they get on a boat to try and run back to her fathers home. In the end, he chased them down and shot down the boat he thought the priest was on, because he knew the priest and the girl loved each other. But it turns out he killed the girl....So...he killed himself too.
