Your favorite Aeneid translations?

Which have been your favorite? I'm not particularly interested in any rhyming translations.

I've read the Robert Fagle translations of the Iliad and Odyssey and while I liked them I thought that they seemed to lack a certain "mythic" voice.

I liked Mandelbaum's translation a lot, but I read it in a poetry class and it might've been the class itself that I particularly enjoyed (ANNND I haven't read any other versions).

So that's one opinion for you, but definitely wait for others if you have time...

I've read both the Fitzgerald and the Mandelbaum translations, and I prefer the Fitzgerald because it strikes me as more stately and poetic. In my Latin class, we used Mandelbaum as a guide in our translation, so I'd guess that Mandelbaum's is the more accurate translation.

I haven't read the Fagles, but I've heard that it is idiomatic to the point of anachronism. It sounds similar to your reaction.

I've only read Fitzgerald and Fagles.

Fagles is more modern sounding and far more poetic, in my opinion. I really like Fagles stuff.

Christopher Pearse Cranch's ... The only version I've read.

Fagles, Fitzgerald, and Lombardo are all great modern translators. Still, the old Dryden translation is a classic in it's own right.

I wouldn't quite take it that far. It is a bit idiomatic and definitely it's going for a more modern, less stuffy feel. It doesn't take you out of the actual work though. He keeps it great.
