One writer I often find neglected in the Beat writer list (maybe to his benefit) is Richard Brautigan.

Truly original American artist and writer. Unlike many of the other beat writers, in my opinion, he was quite capable of being innovative and interesting at the same time.

Certainly, I'd take Brautigan over Kerouac. They both could wander in non-story territory but Brautigan could take you somewhere beautiful if not meaningful each time.

Just my opinion. Feel free to crucify me.

I read 'some' Brautigan some time ago, I didn't mind it, a few ideas and stuff

Does Burroughs count? He's funnier than both of them, and considerably stranger all up (if strange is a criteria)

For the Beat poets Ferlinghetti, and actually, quite a few are cool (and still quite relevant)

William S. Burroughs. Hands down.
