View Full Version : The 12 Months

It began with yellow.
There were streamers and airhorns
and careless partying,
drunken strangers
behaving like old friends.

Then it was pink,
and the drunken strangers
became sober friends
and the air smelled of chocolate
filled with music, soft and sweet.

Then came the green,
a pale green that grew more bright
like fresh young grass
popping up to feel the sunshine
and the friends took walks together
in the park.

Green faded into blue
and the friends laughed together
and alone
and they thought about how much
they preferred laughing together.

With the passing of time came the white
the color of soft cotton clouds
and under a sweet-smelling tree
two hands touched gingerly
and neither moved away.

They barely noticed the orange
appear in their lives,
as they could think only of
the other
and hide their faces
when they blushed.

Then there was purple
and under popping fireworks
their lips gently touched
and perfume and cologne
mixed in the air.

A crisp, golden brown
flew in on a leaf
and the new lovers
showed each other off
and could not take their eyes
off each other.

The air brought the silver
and the blissful calm
which enveloped the lovers
and they were floating.

With the chill came indigo
deep as their love
as its roots grew in their hearts
with bonds
seemly unbreakable.

But then red tore through their lives
and it burned them
worse than any fire could
and the roots were ripped from their hearts
and left deep wounds.

And as black smoke settled in
on the charred remains
of their ravaged hearts
they found themselves alone
and they waited for a new beginning.

---2010 was not the greatest for me, but it is almost 2011, and I plan to make the most of this new beginning. Happy New Year everyone, and good luck.---

This one was overlooked, and what a pity. There are great moments in it! Thanks for sharing and thanks also for your New Year's wishes! May your good resolutions become realities in this year!
I think your poem needs just a bit of revising, see what you can do; the end is not strong enough and it needs one colour you haven't used (I also don't like "deep wounds", too obvious).
A life's relationship through colours is a nice take, moonbird, along with the months. I find it original.

Best of all to you, Bar
