Devadasi

Devadasi Devadasi
Tell the tale with singing hands
Sacred handmaid Siva honour
Praise the God through all the lands

Devadasi Devadasi
Swasticum, Garuda's wing
Grace and beauty now in motion
Siva Lingam, legends sing

Devadasi Devadasi
Heed the Tabla, dance, transform
Spinning, swaying, rapt in worship
Taking Nataraja's form

Devadasi Devadasi
Hear the Tabla's measured beat.
Sit and watch you, lost in wonder
Lost at last in love complete

Devadasi Devadasi
Dance you now for all to see.
Praise your God in fullest measure
Give your heart alone to me.

Notes:

Devadasi => Indian temple dancer extensively trained in Bharata Natyam, Indian classical dance.

Swasticum, Garuda and Sivalingam are positions of the hands and feet used during the dance

Nataraja => An incarnation of Siva as the Lord of the Dance

Tabla => A small percussion instrument resembling a western drum

I am fortunate in that both my wife and my niece are Bharata Natyam dancers.

Very nice poem. I enjoyed the meter and the subject is refreshing new, at least to me.
