Supper was done and it is a cold night with a lite snow falling; thank goodness the holidays were winding down. Father was upset with the latest news of the depression, the cost of groceries and fuel and Mother was ignoring him as usual. Tim, my little brother was being as noisy as he could be and Mother actually came into the parlor and begged him to be “softer” as she put it.
I was sitting on the sofa, my dress nicely placed about my legs and trying to listen to the radio….as women were making it into these times…. The talk radio spoke of many females who had made advances….Amelia Earhart had earned her wings, Margaret Sanger was standing for birth control and Bessie Smith was bellowing out the blues….and here I sit.
“Women, what do they know about?” Father snorted. “All they want is more security.”
I decided it was time to go up to my room and sat at my makeup table and started. I pulled my hair back with a headband; used a powder brush with pale powder and swept the powder on my face starting at the forehead and working downward. Then I applied eye shadow and liner and never forget the mascara! Next I swirled blush across my cheeks, then I lined and painted in my lips…to create the illusion of a small child like lips. I smiled at my self in the mirror and longed for a lover.
“Ah Jones….if only you could see me now.” I spoke the words out loud.
I then heard the door bell sound and wondered who at this late hour would be calling? Champ, our family dog; raced to the door barking and Tim was right behind him. Mother and Father had settled down in front of the TV and were watching Laurence Welks.
“Lili, Your boyfriend is here!” I heard Tim chant…..and of course this raised Father as he approached the door.
“Do come in Mr. Jones.” Father cleared his throat, “What brings you around so late in the evening?”
“Well Sir, I noticed it was a nice night out and thought that perhaps Lili would like to take a skate on farmers Brown’s pond. All the young people are over there skating…maybe you, Tim and misses would like to join?”
“I think not.” Father replied quickly…..Tim came running up to him.
“Please Father; it sounds like so much fun!”
“Not tonight….maybe another time.” Father had put his foot down.
I had been standing at the top of the stairs listening to all of this and I knew father did not like me seeing Jones….my heart was pounding in my chest….my pulse racing…
I quickly went back to my bedroom and slipped on a hooded jacket so I could hide my made up face…OMG father would have a fit over that!
I calmly walked down the stairs and smiled.
“Jones, so good to see you! I over heard your conversation. Ice-skating. I would luv to.”
Father made a disgruntled noise….and as I grabbed my skates out of the hall closet. Tim begged me to take him with us…and mother, well she told us to have fun, be good and not too late.
Once outside the door I flipped back my hood and laughed. Jones stopped dead in his tracks.
“What have you done to your face?”
“It is called make-up you silly boy! Do you not like it?”
“I love it.”
Once at farmer’s Brown Lake we sat on a broken down bench and put on our skates. You hugged me and I smiled,
“Thank you for rescuing me! I thought you were still out of town?’
“Just got in Baby and could not wait to see you. As I passed here on my way, well I just thought what a wonderful thing to share.”
I kissed you on your cheek as you are so thoughtful and sweet.
We glided across the ice as if angels were leading us…You holding me and smiling. No words just touch and feelings. Your hand was with mine sharing my warm hand muff which match my fur scarf; your fingers kept tapping and running along my palm making me more then warm. We skated fast at one point and I thought I was going to fall! You caught me and crushed my red made-up lips with yours….true bliss.
