I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with Bataille's works beyond his erotic fictions. I've always been fascinated by him but found his repertoire to be extremely inaccessible. After reading the online translation of 'The Cruel Practice of Art,' I'm convinced that delving further into his philosophical works would be ultimately rewarding.

I studied Bataille a bit for university. Personally i didnt like him, although i should note that i only had a book of his short stories. One of my professors was very interested in his treatise on eroticism however.

Bataille's philosophy is fabulous. I too don't care for his fiction nor his poetry nor his eroticism, his response to Breton's surrealism.

But the book 'Inner Experience' [has nothing to do with eroticism] is probably one of my top 40 favorite books of philosophy; it's actually part of a trine of works. I've yet to read 'The Unfinished System of non-Knowledge' but it's been on my list for about 2 years.

It seems to me that almost all of Bataille's works are surrealist in nature.

'Inner Experience' is definitely on my list. I also recently picked up a copy of his biography by Michel Surya, has anyone read that?
