cracked ice

cracked ice


starting over a new life
is like stepping onto cracked ice
everything you knew is left behind
the safety of the shore
in the back of your mind
will the ice break
drowning you in cold loneliness
will you make to the opposite shore
one foot after another
new friends new home
new love new life
as you slip and almost fall
you look back at the past
for a moment
recalling the safety there
then you remember the pain
the reasons your here
you hear the grown of the ice
your life flashes past
but its only your own cry
as you despair
you gather yourself
with a deep breath
you slip and you slide
you clamber ashore on the far side
praying for spring praying for life
you look back over the ice
hoping this is the last time
you cross
cracked ice
