I'm reading The Quran Translated by M.Marmaduke Pickthall. Its a page turner since the language is so easy to understand than the usual english translations of the Holy Quran.

Anyone who wishes to read the English Quran, I would say just go for it !

I was actually considering doing this, I will have to do it at some stage.
It would be good to get an understanding of different cultures.

I have two copies of the Quran. One was translated with commentary by Maulana Muhammad Ali and the the other was a gift by a Muslim co-worker and translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. He said he preferred the translation.

Assuming this is a thread on the Quran, I have a question about punishment for adultery.

Earlier this year I heard that Taliban Muslims in northern Afghanistan stoned a couple for adultery. I thought it was a political move to prove they controlled the area, but now that I think about it, why did they not flog the couple as it is stated in Surah 24?

I'm not a scholar of Islam nor Quran, but according to my thinking, the punishment for adultery is different for a married person and an unmarried person. For an unmarried, flogging is recommended as a punishment as you have pointed out. A married person is stoned if and only if there are witnesses
willing to testify that adultery has been committed. Hope we could get some more authentication of this fact from a learned scholar too.
