Dust makes a sound on the coffin lid -
Sounds like spilt milk.
He wipes his tears,
Bows his head,
As more flow,
Free.
An orphan now -
At 41 -
And it feels as it would if the numbers were swapped,
And he were just a child...
His wife strokes his shoulder, it's like she’s pulling him back,
So fast-
He’s dizzy
Then suddenly sick,
His sons support him on the way to the car.
He weeps like a fool...
They drive back in silence,
As he moans in agony,
Big, wallowing, heaving, shuddering sobs -
Head clouded with thoughts of the woman,
Back in the mid 70s,
Who could have been a film star -
Who owned the world when she walked the streets,
In the wedge shoes and the chiffon dress.
Who smoked like a chimney -
Talked cheap in good company,
And never liked him to put his hands near her perfect coiffure.
The woman who is now grey headstone.
Without that wide white smile,
And steely eyes.

He dreams of her that night. Walking through the cemetery. Swallowing the world up in her stride.

It’s really quite the opposite.

That was amazing, very sad.
From the start of it with the "Dust makes a sound on the coffin lid" sets the sad tone to it and it continues on.
This was very good, you should be pleased with yourself.

I really enjoyed this journey starting at grief, walking through the past and back to reality.
