When I first read "The Metamorphosis" back in high school, I felt a sense of sadness in myself reading the protagonist's struggles to cope with becoming an insect. I felt that the piece itself was a metaphor of change, meaning that there are times when the futures we get are not what we had in mind, most of the time for the worse.
