Hello to all, I'm an artist in southern Florida interested in E Hemingway and his life.
After reading some of his Key West/Cuba works my wife came up with the idea of "Postcards to Ernest". A series of postcards sent to him from an unknown friend, depicting images of life in the islands during the times of some specific island books he wrote.

Here is the first in a the series:

I would like your feedback, this image is 18x24 watercolor/acrylic on arches 140 lb cold press.

I will start with a gallery in Key West on Duval and see if there is interest.

I love the stories and parts of his life, I have lived in the area where he went to high school and where he ended his life and love th ememories of him in Key West.

Thanks for any feedback.

Dear terrygar
Loved it & its now my screensaver! How much do I owe you? Good luck with the enterprise. Have recently finished "To Have and Have Not" and there must be some good images there.
Best regards
M.

In the 1920s, when Hemingway was learning about pictures from Gertrude Stein, he bought an oil from Joan Miro. It was a painting of Miro's father's barn done as a surrealistic object. He bought it on time for $250 with the agreement if H. missed a payment, the painting would revert to Miro. H. happened to mention that he hadn't sold a story so he would have to give Miro back his painting. A collection was taken up at Harry's Bar, and the money was given to H. to pay Miro.

Years later, when Castro took over Cuba, H's house went to the new government. Hearing about the Miro painting, Castro sent it back to H's widow, Mary. It was hung at H's place in Idaho, and I suspect the $250 painting is now worth several million.

That's a great image and i'd probably buy it if I saw it for sale or something.

Yeah, anyway, I think this is a good idea.

That was so interesting about the painting & a little known side to the Castro persona.

During my initial years in Jamaica I used to visit Noel Cowards house "Firefly" and used to immerse myself in the stories told by his housekeeper Imogen. His paintings were still there and the big open aperature in the living room (a room with a view) & you could sit at his desk, and his books were before you. Now alas, the paintings have disappeared & the books purloined, but at least I had a moment in time!

Ian Flemings house was near on the beach, and man, that was sparse!

Terry. Nothing but compliments from the folks in the Middle East on your work & my screensaver. My best wishes for success.

M.

Wow, that's a nice image. I wouldn't mind having it in my office. Great variety in objects that relate to Hemingway, i.e. the swordfish, cigar, palm leaves, etc. Exactly what I imagine when I think of Hemingway and/or Key West.

I'm heading down to Key West in a few weeks. What's the name of your gallery?

I have been reading a lot of Hemingway recently, since we used 'Hills Like White Elephants' in my creative writing class when we were studying dialogue. It got me into him again and since then i've been quite obsessed.
