Hello everyone, this is my first post here! I am hoping somebody can help me in tracking down a short story that my English teacher read to our class about ten years ago...
The story moved me, and I have little memory of the details. It was, however, about a man's (maybe a sled driver's) close relationship with a snow dog. It was probably based in Alaska or Canada... It is told from the man's perspective.
There is an object, a stick, i think, that is important in their relationship.
It ends with the dog dying. The man had chained it to a post. It died chained to that post, and had struggled unsuccessfully to turn to face the east before dying (an act that is regarded in the story as being very important to dogs) in the man's absence. The stick is nearby.
I cannot remember much more about it than that.
If you have read anything that sounds a bit like this I would love to hear from you! Sorry my details are so sketchy...
Thank you,
Hugh
