I've been a keen reader of literature since I was in 7th grade and its been a never ending journey since. I happened to delve into classic literature and have read almost all of Hardy, Tolstoy, Dickens, Wilde's works. Not to mention an adequate number of modern literature too. Though I'm fluent in spoken and written English (not my native language), I have been unable to write !

I don't get lots of ideas for the story and sometimes my sentences get broken, thoughts trailing off... I don't know if its necessary to put too much words to portray the image or too much into dialogues. Sometimes, I am able to write successfully, but on re-reading the passage I find it to be totally lackluster and utterly boring !

Can anyone please tell me any tips to get ideas for the stories and get over with broken and monotonous sentences? I really really want to write.

My advice would be just to keep at it.

There's this ridiculous theory, which I think has crushed many would-be artists, that if you're not "naturally" great at something then you never will be. Sure, some people do seem to be naturally inclined towards certain things, and there are those rare prodigies, but most great artists did not get to where they are by having been born with a talent, they got to where they are through hard work, dedication and endless hours of self doubt and frustration. I guarantee you that Leo Tolstoy had the same frustrations that are currently plaguing you. Gustave Flaubert is also a great example, as all account suggest that he had no natural affinity with words whatsoever, and would often spend an entire week trying to construct a coherent paragraph.

So, just keep it up. You'll get to where you want to be someday. :)

Only Shakespeare "never blotted a line." but that was in a panegyric.

Keep a Journal. Every night spend 20 minutes writing in it.
