Hey guys,

I wrote this just after my Grandad died roughly a year ago and I wanted to share. He was a soldier in World War 2 and that's how he saw himself; as an old soldier.

Grandad

The last moments of Her Majesties’ finest:
Crowded, as once in battle he had been.
Surrounded, not by foe, but those who loved him best,
A constant in our lives, he had been.

The old soldier, surrounded by kin,
Breathes peacefully, warm and silent,
Drifting, not plummeting to God’s grace within,
You’re departure; peaceful, not violent.

In a hushed silence by your bed we sit,
Dreading the moment you must leave.
But to undignified death, you won’t submit,
You’re love for us shows no reprieve.

And so the soldier’s last battle has come,
And he lays down his arms before death,
Surrounded by loved ones, unlike some,
I cry as you take your last breath.

A fine poem, poignant and dignified. Peace to you and your grandad.
