I nominate Don Quixote becasue I picked up a copy of the book a while back and I could use the extra motivation to get myself to start reading it.

I'd like to nominate The Luck of Barry Lyndon by Thackeray
I have watched tens of times Kubrick's film and I have always desired to read the novel, let's see if this will be the right time to do it.

This is the first time I think that I would be content to read any of the books that won, nearly all of them are on my to be read list.

I wish Augie March could win. I've always wanted to read Saul Bellow.
Kind of upset to miss the opportunity to nominate "The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan". Never got a chance to finish it. It was so amusing that I decided to take it to my dad who was recovering from heart attack back then. That entertained him a lot.:)

Commmmmmmme on Don Quixote. I'm planning to read this mammoth anyways, and this would give me some motivation (Holla, Dark Muse :)).

Hahah yes I know just what you mean. I have it sitting on my shelf, and I want to read it, but at the same time it daunts me, so I could really use that extra push to get me to it.

I know. I don't know what version you have, but I just got the Edith Grossman translation. It's bad enough that it's huge and heavy, but then you open up and see how many words are on a page, and it is intimidating, to say the least. That its color is a nice, foreboding blood-red doesn't help, either, lol.

I think DQ is too long to read in February.
How about some Saul Below!

I am planning to read Don Quixote in February, but I always seem to be casting a vote for some old book, which everybody else has read once.... so I haven't voted yet. Oh, but I see DQ is heading the race right now. I'm not complaining.

Yeah! Let's go DQ! Woot woot!
Actually, I'm going to start reading it tomorrow/Thursday. I guess this breaks the rules, but I definitely won't be done with it by February. Hopefully before March, though.

Augie is a big danged book too.But only half of DQ, isn't it?
And, shhhh! That's my only selling point with Augie!

Correct as usual, Scher.
Looks like the man from La Mancha is ahead by a nose. But since it's so big and it's roughly divided in half between its two books, maybe book 1 or 2 is plenty ambitious for a monthly read.

Just read The White Tiger; it is a great book. Won't mind discussing it here if it wins.

Scher exercises her authority and wisdom in breaking the tie... and we know which she'll choose.
Mutatis-Mutandis
02-01-2011, 11:11 PM
Well, that's lame, but whatever. And not just because my choice may not get picked--it would suck just as much for the Augie March people if DQ was picked. Why not a five-day poll on just the two? If that turns out to be a tie, then okay, just choose.

One book in each hand - what's your problem?

If we follow past practice I believe the old fashioned, yet effective coin toss is employeed.

Well, these are two pretty long books, but I guess that could work. Though, I'd only really participate in the DQ discussion, as I'm not planning on reading Augie March.
Just read The White Tiger; it is a great book. Won't mind discussing it here if it wins.
I'm just a couple of chapters into it and it's really good. Too bad it didn't win. Which one is it going to be though?

Well, it looks like Scher decided to ignore all suggestions and just go with Augie March.

Having another poll for another 5 days will take away from a month that is already shorter than others.
In the Book Club usually we flip a coin in cases of a tie as Papayahed has already mentioned; however, this time I have decided to go simply with the shorter book.
The aim of the Book Club is reading books together; it matters little which one that would be. If you take the time to check out the past threads, you will realise that more than often we go with the book that has won the coin-flip (regardless of my personal preference).
Now that this issue has been dealt with, hopefully, we can put it behind and carry on with reading and discussions.

Okay, fair enough. I trust there is nothing wrong with having a discussion over DQ in the Cervantes forum?
