1984- what can I say that hasn't already been said? although it is a good book, i just don't appreciate the length. I haven't always had the most intellegent things to point out about it, and this is probably an annoying thing to say about it as well- it was boring. there were messages in there that I think everybody should be aware of, surrounded by so much literary blah that it seemed pointless-notthat it was. I agree about its importance. I just don't think it was the best way to introduce such concepts, especially in a high school setting.

I am a high school student. I think it's good to introduce it to us at a young age. I think these concepts need to be taught to us now. To know that we have a voice in our government. And to give us an example of what we don't want. I also believe that it's not boring, once you dig into it and think about what Orwell us trying to say, it's gets you thinking. Yeah, it is a little slow. But if it was to quick you wouldn't be able to grasp the concepts that Orwell tried to show us.

Orwell purposly wrote this book to make us confused. He is trying to get the readers to think and create opinions.

I agree with both of you, to an extent. The book is meant to make you think, though there could have been a better way to go about doing so. 1984 is a good book, and I would recommend it to anyone in high school who wants to try going above and beyond to read it, but I don't believe it should be a required read until your Freshman or Sophomore year in college. The book is great, but while in high school you may not be able to get as much out of it as you would from the ages 18-20. Yes, this book is a classic, it's important and it certainly should be read by everyone at some point in their lives, but it shouldn't be formally introduced until thjose introduced have enough life experience to grasp the concepts thoroughly, if that makes any sense at all. I'm not saying high school students aren't intelligent, and I'm not saying they're ignorant. I'm just saying that most high school students generally don't care enough to apply their outside knowledge to the book; many would just use sparknotes or class discussions in order to get by. Like the_river_styx said, it is pretty boring, but important, nonetheless. It would be more appreciated in college.:smile5:

I agree with Amorcita, 1984 is a good book. Although I think that you could have gotten the same message with less literature. I feel that 1984 shouldn't be a requirment untill atleast 12th grade, younger high school students may not care as much to really take the time to understand the book, and use the information within it. If not required, the book should be read by anyone who has an interest with the government. The messages Orwell has are important, and shouldn't be ignored.

1984 is a great book. I think George Orwell did a grey job putting his thoughts down into a novel. 1984 is an excellent book for everyone to read. It really shows the reader that they need to pay attention to the government. He shows us the dangers of ignorance.
I think the book was well written and Orwell got his ideas shown trough a great peice of literature.

I agree with student101, being a student in high school i didnt have much of an interest reading 1984. by the end of my high school years i bet that i'll forget about 1984 because of how early set i read it. Maybe in college i'll pick it up again but i believe that it should have been read in college or in 12th grade.
