In many people's opinion 1984 should be taught in all schools. I am not dissagreeing with this. I believe that Orwell has some very imortant governmental and political veiws.

I believe that Orwell's novels Animal Farm and 1984 do express Orwell's case in point very clearly. But I belive that they both show the same case and point, so there for teaching both books would almost be thinking through Orwell's thoughts to far. I think the age level that the books are taught would determine which book should be used. For a younger grade level I would suggest using Animal Farm, because the points are clear and obvious and easier to comprehend then 1984. But at like a higher level if the goal was to really disect Orwell's belief and points to be proven, 1984 is full or information to learn from.

Well being a high school student my opinion on the book 1984 is that it is a great book. But I think when the government is watching you and telling you what to do is a little creepy. I would say that this is a must read book for high school students because it shows you what happened in history. I believe that this book is an eye opener if you do not read this book by the end of high school read it on your own.

You're the second person to say that, but it's wrong - there is nothing historical in 1984.

idk man, I think google's ability to see anything and everything proves there could be a lot more going on for the last couple of decades that we knew nothing about. Maybe Orwell was in on it, and decided he was against it and wrote 1984 because of that.

@ Atheist: Actually, you're wrong. Big Brother being at war with first one country and then joining them as allies reflects Britain joining with Russia to fight Hitler after giving him all that power in the first place.

Whoa!

First off, while Google can record your online movements, it only works if you use Google, and many people don't. Also, the vast majority of my life isn't lived online.

There was no internet when Orwell wrote 1984 and in fact, even computers were extremely basic.

No, that's just wrong. Orwell was not reflecting Russia changing sides - he'd done that in Animal Farm. The changing sides was put in to show the working of doublethink and has no historical bearing at all. In any case, Russia changing sides had little to do with the Allies and everything to do with being attacked by Germany.

I'm not quite sure who you're saying gave power to whom, so I'll let you clarify that.

I think that it didn't show what happened in history, but it does show what could happen to your history if we're not careful.

I think Orwell was obsolete before he wrote. It was all a speculation on people's paranoia. Much different than Huxley who was not so drastic and offered useful warnings as to how to handle the Brave New World.
1984, properly interpreted is a commic. Animal Farm makes no points of lasting utility.
