Hidden behind the cereal box,
I loved to read the Beano.
Dressed in the itchiest trousers
finding a dried up cornflake on the page,
from this edition's last outing.
I loved an unopened bottle of milk,
for the promise of cream on top.
It makes me think,
I was happy back then
and what a god awful gift,
more,
could turn out to be.

Good old Beano! I was always a Whizzer and Chips gal. Fusspot and sweettooth. Pongo Snodgrass....I think life did promise to be much more then..

No, it has to be Biffo the Bear. An absolute icon of anthropomorphism. And as for 'the itchiest trousers' - I also had a pair (with short-legs even - oh the humiliation in secondary school!).

The realism is your poetry is awesome, here the first stanza stands testimony to that.
The milk you get has a top layer of cream? What kind of cow? ohh and more of what? I feel dumb now...

Yes, Jerry, life definately seemed a lot simpler when I was a kid. Can't say I'm where I either expected, or wanted to be, when looking through the other end of time's telescope. Good observation and evocation in this poem.
Best, H
