In1984, Orwell made several warnings toward where our society was, and is, going. He certainly predicted accurately how governments would use war and constant surveillance to control our thoughts and actions. While this is not as true for many western countries, in places like China, Russia, and North Korea, the governments still use the same methods to gain control. Orwell has also accurately predicted the use of cheap entertainment to steer the emotions of the people away from the government.
To date, though, Orwell wasn't able to predict all of the events. The dismal situations that Winston and Julia faced are a far cry from most of today's societies. In Western countries there is almost complete freedom of speech and a democratic goivernment. Orwell also predicted that the Government would control sex. This is the exact opposite of what happens today.
Just because some of Orwell's predictions haven't come true, it doesn't mean that they never will. Today almost all public places are under some type of surveillance. All it would take is for the federal government to be involved for us to lose our freedom. This is already being seen, especially after the 9/11 attacks. Also, Orwell predicted that there would be food and materials rations. Today all one has to do is look at gasoline prices and the economy to know that this is starting to happen.
For the nightmare that Orwell predicted to come true, all it takes is for a few bad prople to make a few bad decisions. The main fact that we should take from 1984, is that if we don't watch ourselves, it won't be long until Big Brother will be watching.
