In my opinion, 1984, by George Orwell is a good book. Whether or not it should be mandatory to read in school, i don't think so. Yes, the book has some good points and ideals about the future, but not all of them are necessary to know. Don't get me wrong, this book is a good book to read if u want to be entertained, but i don't think this book can really educate people, and that's why i don't think it's necessary to read it in school. It's a good book if you want to read it on your own, but i don't think it should be mandatory.

i fully agree with this, yes 1984 s a fabulous novel and is certainly a thinker, but it wasnt like it was life changing. there are many strong morals to this story and many lessons to be taught but again it didnt alter my thoughs or life so i dont feel it is totally neessary to teach to highshool students. especially when half of them dont even fully read the books they are given.

I think the trouble is that you have to study a book to complete English requirements, and it really has to be one book, so examiners can mark fairly.

If there's a better choice, put it forward.

I don't think 1984 is essential reading either, but it's an extremely good choice for compulsory study.
