At the end of the novel while Winston is in captivity O'Brien is always interrogating him. I don't understand how O'Brien knows what Winston is thinking, or what he has thought in the past. For example, O'Brien knew Winston was thinking about how O'Brien's face is old and tired. Also, that he was thinking about how O'Brien talks about power, and yet he isn't even to prevent the own decay of his body. Is it the expressions in Winston's face?

I think that O'Brien only wants Winston to believe that he knows what he is thinkning to cause more fear. O'Brien only tortures Winston becasue he is simply trying to prove to Winston that reality is what the Party defines it as.

How does he make such accurate guessses then?

O'Brien has watched and studied Winston for six years so it easy for him to read his expressions. Also he has read his diary making it easier for him to understand Winston's thoughts and beliefs.

Winston has been told for so long that people can read minds that he believes it. I think Winston believes that people can read minds and is to afraid to say that they are wrong. He just agrees with them.

O'Brien knows what Winston thinks because he is a member of the thought police.

I don't believe O'Brien actually can read Winston's mind. He's been interrogating people for so long that guessing what they think comes easy to him. He also has been watching Winston for a very long time, and he does have his diary which also factors into it.

I believe that O'Brien knows Winston well enough to know what he's thinking and he can read Winston's facial expressions.

I wondered how O'Brien always managed to know what Winston was thinking. Nothwithstanding O'Brien's intelligence, experience as an interrogater, and the amount of time and effort he has spent getting to know Winston, it is still strange that he always guesses right. He is obviously not a man to play poker with.
