Do you know where...?

Where does this haunting story comes from....In a village a child is dying. The parents wonder whether or not to tell him. After many sleepless nights they consult the village elders. They suggest the parents ask the little boy to volunteer to look after their puppy who had been killed in a road accident and needed someone to feed him and stroke him. And when they asked the child, he said, "Yes, he would do so."

I heard a snippet of this on the radio years ago and can't forget it.
