The More I Know of You

What is it that lies
behind the cracked
ivory veneer which
covers your face
painted in black?

Once I thought I knew,
I was blind to the mask,
thought I could see through
to eyes burning behind
to a soul lying inside
but lately it appears
I see less and less of you
and more of the construct
you begin to build
fusing together bit by bit.

Still you deny
that you have any disguise
to hide behind
but your parlor tricks
of hand an eye
are beginning to wear thin.

I begin to see
past all of your illusions,
but the more of the truth
I realize the more you become
covered within your own
lies.

No longer do I know
what to do,
it seems I am watching you
slowly disappear
vanishing before my eyes
and a stranger emerges
from the mist.

And we stand eye to eye
muted with nothing left
to say.

A mesmerising piece, DM. For some reason it felt as if this was someone speaking to their reflection in a mirror. Maybe not, but an enjoyable read and extremely enigmatic.

I found your avatar oddly cohesive with this poem which is as Hill says, mesmerising.

This was not directed at myself, but I can see where it may give that impression.
