So, who else here is a metal head? I love metal. Aside from jazz, I can't think of any other genre in which you will find so many bands with unbelievably talented musicians. My favorite sub-genre of heavy metal is progressive metal. I love Opeth (amazing progressive death metal band from Sweden), Between the Buried and Me (awesome technicality and song writing skills), and Tool (come on, it's Tool.

I enjoy some metal:

Buckethead-one of the best guitar players alive

System of a Down

Dr. Acula

Pantera

Metallica

I will have to give those bands a listen. Thanks.

Like all of them. Metallica and Pantera are what got me into metal in the first place. Heard of Dr. Acula, need to check 'em out.

I'd say that I'm about 1/10th metal. My friend steve is a huge metalhead and some of the influences that he passed on to me include The Devin Townsend Band, Epica and In Flames.

Nowadays I'm mostly a headbanger of the symphonic type, swimming among the sounds of Nightwish, Tarja, EPICA, Within Temptation and so on.

Before that, I've enjoyed Ozzy, Queenr˙che, Savatage, Metallica, Megadeth and Testament among others, and I still do, though I began my relations with the genre when I was a kid with bands of the sort of Guns N' Roses and Poison.

I also discovered Kamelot, Leaves' Eyes, Amberian Dawn, Apocalyptica, Delain, Sirenia and Elis recently.

Although not being symphonic metal, I find that many of W.A.S.P.'s songs are quite symphonically poetic, so I like W.A.S.P. a lot, especially their latest albums which are very conceptual.

Jazz and metal being the only two genres of musical talent? There is a huge gap of great music that is evidently being averted! Metal has its areas of power, but the further down you go, the more cacophonic it becomes. It is hardly original anymore, and becoming too cliched. The basic elements of music are hidden under an elusive pile of guitar shredding and screeching followed by neanderthalian grunts and screams. I can only listen to certain genres of metal such as classic, thrash and some neo, Metallica actually being an all-time favorite, but I must be in a well preparatory mood in the forehand.

I didn't say that jazz and metal were the only two genres of musical talent. I said they're the only two genres with so many bands that have musical talent. Of course every genre has talented musicians, I just feel jazz and metal have more.

Metal has its areas of power, but the further down you go, the more cacophonic it becomes.

Cacophony doesn't equal musical ineptness, though. It seems to be quite the oppositte, as the most complex and technical of metal becomes the most discordant to the undiscerning ear. Listen to Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me, Unexpect, Nile, or Spiral Architect and you'll find an organized chaos that is mind-blowing if understood.

It is hardly original anymore,

Not all of it's original, of course, but there are still plenty of band pushing the limits of what metal is and can do, and changing the genre. Any of the bands I listed fit this category (except maybe Nile). Other bands that come to mind off the top of my head are Mastodon, Ihsahn, and Meshuggah.

and becoming too cliched.

How so?

Metal isn't really about the basic elements of music.

Just today I discovered After Forever, and I'm beginning to like it already. Very probably, I'll get to love it in a matter of a few days. I just need to get my ears accustomed to their sound, though they had no trouble to become addicted to Floor Jansen's voice http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs15/f/2007/105/5/8/Nem_Guitar_red_by_nunyx.gif http://smiles.kolobok.us/artists/just_cuz/JC_rockin.gif

Sorry, but this is still just ignorant. So many groups of blues, prog rock, folk, r & B, funk, pop, hip-hop, alternative(all the sub-genres of rock, there are so many) classical, bluegrass, opera, the list goes on and on. Much more than Jazz and Metal combined. I highly recommend some more diversity within your listening.

When the 'music' becomes just a shrill and screeching or squealing noise, I stop listening. This is usually the case with death metal/death grind/black metal and other similar styles. At least thrash metal and classic metal can still keep a recognizable beat. Until it all begins to twist up into a cyclone of death growls, excessively thundering drumming and speedy guitar shreds, it is no longer enjoyable to me. To play faster does necessarily make it better.

I suppose I get a bit tired of the Satanic image it represents while claiming to not really be Satanic. I am not really offended by it, it just gets old, just as well as the hundred-million pop love songs out there. As well the frequent recycling of old riffs. But this occurs in a lot of music, especially new music.

Metal isn't really about the basic elements of music. Then why call it music? Classic metal is still one of the few that can hang on to these elements.

Even though I'm beginning to feel a bit 'over the heel' (a recent development since appearing at litnet, I must confess a fondness for Metal - though not the extreme nor thrash kind.

If you're to old for metal you're too old for life.

I grew up in the era of Zepplin, Floyd and Purple (actually I was a bit precocious because I had older siblings and friends). Back then the buzzword was simply 'heavy'.

But as I grew more albums appeared im my library like ACDC, Budgie's Never Turn Your Back on a Friend, and gentler stuff like Uriah Heep, King Crimson.

But then something weird happened in 75/6 - The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Souxie and the Banshees - all thses exciting new rock bands that weren't bathed in their own Dinosaur Aura. You had to be there.

It was fresh and alive and it wasn't full of pompous B.S. and poncing on the stage like they were some stupid RockGods.

But Punk as a movement became a fashion as a lot emerged very little of it worth listening to, and it was the hip young new fashion designers that incorporated safetypins and garbage bags and whatnot that cemented its place in the history books.

But I never lost interest in Metal - and the good stuff still appears in my library - like 10000 Days the day it was released.

ROCK ON!

I listen to a ton of prog rock (love Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, The Flower Kings, Zappa, etc.). I listen to straight jazz, some reggae, some indie, some classic rock, and contemporary rock. I need to listen to more classical. I don't like hip-hop, and have yet to hear and with much musical talent. I feel I have enough diversity in what I listen to.

Of course all other genres combined have more talented musicianship than jazz and metal. I meant each genre on its own. This is my opinion. Take that for what little it's worth.

Don't accuse me of making ignorant statements, and then write something like this. Just because you can't recognize a beat doesn't mean it isn't there. It's more complex, and harder to play. Don't bash it just because you don't understand it.

"Metal isn't really about the basic elements of music."

Then why call it music? Classic metal is still one of the few that can hang on to these elements.

Why call it music? Is this a real question, or were you just being facetious?

Stick to your bland musical tropes if it pleases you. I prefer to listen to something different.
