Breathe
Drink in her perfume
I exhale myself apart
a home free animal's
born that way to run
gravel streets before me
feet burnin' like the sun
On a porch beside the street way
Old men are heard to say
"Where ya headin' kid,
high-tailin' like a coyote*."
Click-clack scrounge movin' pavement
like a coyote*.
I tell them drunk on love I say
"It's time to claim my prize."
and as the words are leaving me a
shadow falls their eyes.
"He wants her body!
He wants her touch!"
"I've heard about such and such,"
I say, "Don't think about that stuff so much.
She's the other half my heaven dream
Now excuse me sirs, I take my leave."
We watch him go and hold our jeers
reservedly sip our beers
"His problem is he's lying!" Bill says despite not trying
Golden wristwatch, wrinkled fingers scratch gray ears
"I think a lust-fire's burning
in our dear misguided yearling
He'll be back this way
tracking trails of tears."
Living clean like sweet ol'Disney leaves you
tracking trails of tears.
"Remember how we held that torch,"
I implore the open porch,
"Curly headed kids grow into men.
But I'll be damned if a year has passed,
I get older, I look back
and I haven't wished to burn as I did then."
Amen, tap the schlitz,
Amen.
"Would have been so nice
were we given that advice
as we youth-thirsted after girlish bounty
Had I known the full damn truth
And not first-marriaged Ruth
I'd have children lost
in every other county."
Children cryin' daddy
in every other county.
Some dreams cut you short,
deny your better part
As returns our Romeo
Clutching broken-heart
He looks right and he looks left
Naught but hurt is all he sees
Till old fellows crack the schlitz
"Here son, this one is on me."
I lived the lesson first, you know
This one is on me.
