Based on Orwell's descriptions in the novel up to the time Winston and Julia are captured for reprogramming, it seems at least inconsistent, if not nonsensical, that INGSOC would spend so much time and effort reprogramming the two. By all accounts, Winston and Julia are inconsequential figures in Oceania who have committed serious thoughtcrimes. Why weren't they simply vaporized? I understand the last third of the story would not be able to occur if they were killed, but not killing them just justifies Orwell's intents, not the logic of the world he has described. Seems that Orwell should have made these two become leaders in the Brotherhood, then their reprogramming and placement back in society would serve to keep other potential intransigents down. Agree? Disagree?
