Besides offering fulltime jobs for physically weak people who couldn't manage a proper work, it is also useful to investigate problems from different perspectives. Philosophy simply throw light upon seemingly simple cases that it's a lot more behind it.

Philosophy, according to the dictionary is the "the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct." The greek translation of the word is simply the "Love of wisdom". Wisdom is often used to define So, Philosophy is simply the exploration of certain ideas. Philosophy helps us to develop our thoughts on the important ideas, such as "Is there a god?", "What is the meaning of life?", "How are we to live?" and so much more. Philosophy engages important ideas, and can often give us insight into important subjects.
That's my understanding of it. Does anyone else have something to add?
In general philosophy deals with solving problems. And it exercises the capability of thinking. Philosophy can make you more flexible in mind.

That is my take of it. I think it's a more of asking simple yet deep thinking question and coming up with your own reason of explaining it. Then getting together with others to get insight on their reasons maybe on the same question.
