Listen to the heart of the world
beating. It is beating
for you or at you or because
of you. You are neither
the diastole nor the cystole
but the waiting beat
in between.

Back in the Renaissance, I don't know if the terms "systole"
and "diastole" were prevalent, but did you know that the rhythm of iambic pentameter was created to mimic inhaling and exhaling and the beating of the heart?

that's awfully interesting. This poem implies we are somewhere between the sump and the pump of a beating heart.

Are you saying that we are all null points, perpetually focused at that moment where two identical vibrations cancel each other out? We would then be the void, the source from which all strength is drawn
Nice idea that :) H

Very thought provoking - we are neither one thing nor another, forever waiting to climb above or plunge below that 'flatline'.

Although I didn't think it through in these terms beforehand, it occurs to me in response to some of the responses that the hidden or as yet unexpressed beat is something like Schrödinger's cat, waiting for God (if you will) or a lover or foe to lift the lid and release that beat...
